marigold nation
2"x1 1/2"
2013
these tiny collages got their start from
diamond easy strike matchboxes.
an easy, workable surface for the miniature.
i cut out hundreds of little pictures from vintage magazines
and collected them until i could manufacture a little over 100 mini-collages.
i was inspired by a fictional woman with a mondegreen for a name:
Adele Lack Cotard which sounds like (a delicate art).
Adele is a character in Synechdoce, N.Y. a film rich in semiotics.
her character produced works of art so small that
one had to use a magnifying glass to see them.
small art forces us to either
lose interest immediately or to have absolute focus
on what this small work means to us.
if it's important to us, somehow we keep watching.
i was surprised to see the amount of time people would
spend looking at these on their own volition.
people would comment on how they seemed
like dream vignettes and how much they loved this one or that.
a portion of these collages took a trip to los angeles by themselves
for THE BURNING LEAVES OF AUTUMN art show
curated by colin manning and cody brant in 2012.
these posted minis are more recent works.
