these tiny collages got their start from
diamond easy strike matchboxes.
an easy, workable surface for the miniature.
i cut out hundreds of little pictures from vintage magazines
and collected them until i could manufacture a little over 100 mini-collages.

i was inspired by a fictional woman with a mondegreen for a name:
Adele Lack Cotard which sounds like (a delicate art).
Adele is a character in Synechdoce, N.Y. a film rich in semiotics.
her character produced works of art so small that
one had to use a magnifying glass to see them.

small art forces us to either
lose interest immediately or to have absolute focus
on what this small work means to us.
if it's important to us, somehow we keep watching.
i was surprised to see the amount of time people would
spend looking at these on their own volition.
people would comment on how they seemed
like dream vignettes and how much they loved this one or that.

a portion of these collages took a trip to los angeles by themselves
for THE BURNING LEAVES OF AUTUMN art show
curated by colin manning and cody brant in 2012.

these posted minis are more recent works.

harmony
6 3/4"x5"

i found a mexican food menu in my friend's van.
it had been exposed to water on the floorboard from rain.
the menu was folded when i picked it up, i unfolded it to find nice
stains and patterns.
i started tracing forms and re-tracing them onto these
found papers with home printer ink color fissures.
i was told these were the ugliest pieces of art i have ever produced.

these elementary drawings made me happy and
drew out a certain nostalgia for contours that
made a satisfying simple application on these
unwanted papers.
there are obvious missing elements that these figures
may have been holding or using, but they have been
removed intentionally.
the approach turned out to leave the
visual context up for more interpretation and
imagination.

sometimes featureless/faceless people occur.
i don't want to remember their expressions; in some cases their faces
left me with an empty,over-exploited feeling that i never
wanted anyone to see.
these were re-done in a manner that delicately changes the nature
of the activities they may have been doing.
which offers a more bleached-out exposure of these subject's
momentary life-glimpse.

signs and symbols that i grew up with
resonate mostly in materials relating to the 80's & 1990's.
these visuals merit a trance of childhood
synthesized chords that i wouldn't care about
until i needed them.

i watched vivid cartoons
i ate dream-sequenced foods
i wore perfume from false alpenglow-ruched flowers
 sears sold cataloged quilted blankets
i still buy appliances that will last well into the 23rd century
my mom had a small amount of costume jewelry hidden in secret drawers
my brother and i were no wave skateboarders
i participated in stereotyped recreation
i had many stuffed animals
i grew up in stark desert scenery
i always read hand-written convenience store notifications
neon clothing i wore proudly(and still do)
